May 21, 2013 at 9:40 PMI once upon a time learned that a question in Chinese is only a question if it's got a "吗“ attached at the end (or contains words like 谁, 什么, etc.), otherwise it is a statement.
So, is there any deeper meaning in saying "你 认识他？" rather than "你认识他吗？“?
In English, the difference in meaning between "You know him?" (question) and "You know him!" (statement) is made by the inflection of the voice, but I thought the Chinese don't really have that concept?

Shanghainese mother-in-law is currently here, and here sole mission in life seems to be to protect the child from wind, sun and cold, which sometimes makes for grotesque scenes in public (and this being England, people around us don't "know" that a little bit of wind is apparently absolutely deadly for a kid, as judging by her reaction).
