June 30, 2008 at 2:28 PMGreat lesson, and perfectly timed as I was just having a heated discusson (no pun intended) with a Chinese friend on why someone would need a rice cooker. At home (in the US) I always cook rice in a pot, and wasn't aware of the "scorching flame" issue in Chinese kitchens. My kitchen in Beijing is decidedly Western with a western-style range. Of course, my Chinese landlords were also kind enough to put in an oven (which gave us an electrical shock the first time we used it, since it wasn't hooked up properly and obviously the owners never tried it themselves) and a dishwasher (which is too small to handle my big, western plates from IKEA). Well, when in Rome....

It's better to have one person ordering to make sure there is a good balance of hot / cold; spicy / sweet; port / beef / fish, etc. Though, when I've been out, like in the dialogue, usually the person ordering will ask if there is something special people would like to have (or to avoid). I really do like the Chinese method of one person ordering and everyone sharing, since you can try a lot of different things.
On the downside, I've often experienced the same scenario at the start of this lesson where nobody wants to take the responsibility for ordering. What's worse is when somebody asks for many menus, so then it's not clear who is in charge. When there's only one, it's kind of like "musical chairs" where the person who ends up with the menu is the one who orders.
