Yes, I forgot about 它. But other than pronouns, its only used for humans.

My take on the 们 is that it is typically used when addressing people, not so typically when referring to people - could be wrong though.

Not sure how much you know about Chinese plurals, but 们 can only be used with people. Inanimate objects and animals have no plural form.

I am afraid you are wrong on that one. 离子 (lízǐ) does mean 'ion'.

An electron is 电子 (diànzǐ)

A negative ion is 负离子 (fùlízǐ).

A positive ion is 正离子 (zhènglízǐ).
