zhenlijiang, the point is not to pass exams but to learn Mandarin so you can understand Mandarin-speakers and they can understand you.  Exams are only for teachers to judge students.  Exams aren't for students unless they are only interested in a wonderful resume.  So if it helps you to write the second tone for 'bu', then do it by all means, and "hang" the examiners.  I'm only speaking figuratively, of course, as far as hanging goes.

Go_manly, I thought you raised a good point.  JasonSch's reply makes me think rén hǎo means sort of both meanings which you can interpret as you wish. After all we, and I include the Chinese, usually want a person to have both qualities and there is no reason they can't exist together in the same person though they don't always.
