October 21, 2012 at 11:16 AMWhy do they put so much emphasis on the tones and not mention that you don't get two third tones in a row. They pronounce "nǐ,hǎo" and then say "níhǎo". The confusion of the different sounds when you combine them is surely not worth hiding this fact, especially since you'd have to undo learning once you learn the tone rules.

October 22, 2012 at 11:49 AM"They", "ChinesePod", have separate lessons on tone, which is where I learnt this fact. But in this particular (beginner) lesson, they shouldn't say "tones are very important", then break "nǐhǎo" into "nǐ,hǎo", when you pronounce it "níhǎo".
For example, at 4.30 in this lesson they remark that there are two third-tones in "nǐhǎo". But the first one isn't pronounced as such! So why bring it up!?
