if you are a serious learner that would prefer to learn more mandarin with less time, I would personally recommend you stay away from Rosetta Stone Mandarin. (Also, it IS pretty expensive if you end up buying the later versions...) It is a fun application and all, but it won't do much at all to help your listening and speaking ability. I nearly finished Rosetta Stone Mandarin Level 2--and my listening/speaking ability had gone no where. Of course, I scored high on Rosetta's tests, but while listening to a disney movie (in Mandarin of course) or attempting the simplest conversation with a Chinese friend...I was a goner! ChinesePod, Pimsleur, and FSI have been strengthening my speaking/listening skills like crayzy! I just waned to share my Rosetta Stone experience with you because it was very frustrating to waste so much time and money on a method that was severely lacking. In fact, I was kind of sad when I saw that Level 3 was ONLY traditional characters even though they give you the simplified option. *sigh*

In Chinese Pod following me on my iPhone?? Just kidding of course, but Chinese Pod keeps having lessons on my home page that are very close to what is going on with my life...like today's funeral =\  Very glad Chinese Pod has so much content...and thank you for this lesson!

have you ever considered the price of a private tutor, or the price you'd pay taking a chinese course? or the price for pimsleur? i don't know if the prices are the same for people in New Zealand, but in the USA the price you pay per month (for premium subscription) is the same as the price one would pay to go out with their mate for a casual dinner night. the price is completely reasonable for me, as I would easily trade 1 casual dinner night every 30 days for an entire month of chinesepod's resources :)
