Posted on: Keeping Pets in China
December 27, 2011 at 2:26 PMAlong the same lines as Chris's comment, what happens to these cute little fashion-statement dogs when their young trendy owners tire of them, or decide what this year's fashion statement is a different breed? Do their owners just throw them out on the street? Or abandon them in a park? I don't know if china has shelters for abandoned animals yet, but even in countries that do, most abandoned animals are euthanized after a few weeks, because there are not enough people who want to adopt. Many dogs can live into their teens, well beyond the time when it is a fashion statement. Animals are living sentient beings. And anyone who buys or adopts one must accept the responsibility of caring for the animal throughout its natural life.

October 11, 2009 at 11:47 AMReply to Juzi's post : "Whether or not you're right about the CCP killing more Chinese than the Japanese did it would surprise me that they killed more than 300,000." The tally so far of Chinese citizens killed by their own governmen after the end of the Revolution in 1949: 8.4 million during the Totalization Period (immediately after 1949), 7.5 m during collectivization and the Great Leap Forward, 10.7 m to 38 m during the Great Famine and Retrenchment Period, 7.7 m during the Cultural Revolution, 8.7 million during Liberalization. Total 43m to 70m (many sources on this; see for example http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/NOTE2.HTM)

June 10, 2008 at 4:41 PMGood topic. Ditto for lessons on Confucius, and on calligraphy. Let's have more lessons on Chinese history, philosophy, art, poetry, etc. After all, what attracted us about China in the first place, at least for us non-Chinese, was not retail transactions, scandals at a beauty pageant, or conflicts with roommates, but rather Chinese culture. The fluffy lessons are OK, and they do teach everyday vocabulary and idioms, but do we need so many of them?
