April 6, 2010 at 2:10 AMI went tomb sweeping with my in-laws once again this year here in Taiwan. Here are some interesting pics from the day. You will see that the Chinese grave yard is quite different from the western ones. There are also quite a few empty tombs and crypts left over from when the remains were moved to a place with better fong shui.

February 1, 2010 at 3:08 AMHI,
I'm a brown haired, blue eyed foreigner that has been living in Taiwan for the last 20 years teaching English to mostly elementary school children. TO answer your question as to whether your long curly hair and your husband's beard will freak the child out. The answer has to be "No, not at all."
Foreigners are very commonly seen here and don't draw much attention. Sure there will be lots of new experiences living in America, but just treat the kid like you do the rest of your kids, lots of love and patience and it will all work out.
When I was between five and ten years old I lived in foster homes and know what it's like to go live with a new family and show up for your first day at a new school. In elementary I went to at least five different schools.
WIth love and patience It will work out. Congratulations on your growing family!!!

May 18, 2008 at 12:58 PMIs the last character in the sign pictured at the top of this page 學 or 学 or yet another form of that character? It doesn't quite look like either the traditional or simplified versions of the character that I have learned. Can anybody explain that one?

May 15, 2008 at 5:46 AMI enjoy cold tea on a hot day. Lots of those here in Taiwan each summer! But, I could never get used to the shot gun like effect of those zhen zu comming up the straw and hitting the back of my throat.

February 25, 2008 at 2:59 PMThis is in reply to davelandis, I'm in Pingtung, the southern part of Taiwan and have been here since 1989. Don't worry. Western style toilets are actually becoming quite common here. Most modern public places in all cities will have at least one western toilet in addition to the squat toilets. In the smaller villages and towns it will be a bit harder to find, but not impossible. And Macdonalds all have western toilets are are easy to find in every city large or small. Come to Taiwan. Relax. Enjoy.

October 23, 2007 at 6:49 AMEileen, HI. Thanks for the quick response. un-bookmarking it, then re-bookmarking it, seems to have fixed the problem. Most of the foreigners I see living here in Taiwan are teaching English to make a living and I expect that the same is true in China. Could we see more teaching related lessons? Thanks. David.

October 21, 2007 at 5:41 AMI recently joined Chinese Pod and although I have bookmarked this lesson, I have not been able to get it to add to my i-tunes Chinesepod/riceeater podcast though i have most of the others I tried to get. How do I get this and the Traditional Character PDF? THanks. David.

April 6, 2010 at 10:22 AMThis lesson would be a great one to redo at the intermediate level. There is a lot of culturally significant things that happen on this day that many of the students would like to learn more about.
How about it Chinese Pod? Will you cover this one again?
