好 is one of these tricky 多音字, where it can be pronounced as hǎo or hào.

When pronounced hǎo, we get hǎoxué, as in:

你觉得中文好学吗？ (Do you find Chinese easy to learn?)

But hào in the 4th tone can be found in words such as àihào and hàoqí, where it means something more akin to 'interest', so hàoxué, would describe somebody who is curious or interested in study.

他是个很好学的人

I sometimes think of 认真 as conscientious (or dedicated as you suggested), as conscientiousness is seen as a very positive trait in the West, where being serious is more ambiguous.
