Chance determines rugby? What about American football? I defy anyone to explain why those refs are throwing their hankies most of the time!
SA won the 1995 World Cup because the awesome New Zealand team just didn't turn up in the final.
Here's how rugby works.
Rugby Union: Ball stays in play when carrier is tackled, carrier must release, and play continues with both teams trying to retrieve the ball.
Rugby League: ball dies when carrier is tackled, who then plays the ball with his foot and play continues immediately. In both of these sports, a "try" must be touched down, but an American "touchdown" doesn't.
American Football: ball dies when carrier is tackled. The 47 or so officials have a long conflab about whether there were any infringements on the play. The entire team for both sides is substituted, as 15 seconds play is the most anybody can manage in full body armour. While this all goes on, the game clock continues to count down. In spite of this, the whole rigmarole lasts about 3 hours. Fortunately none of this is shown in the TV coverage, as we have long since gone to a commercial!
