Correct me if I am wrong, but I think a better translation of 读 (dú) is 'read out loud', rather than 'read'.

In this context, the teacher uses 读 (dú) because the students will read and then actually say the words.

If you read to yourself, without saying anything, you should use 看 (kàn).

This is why you can't say "我不懂读汉子" (Wǒ bù dǒng dú hànzì).  You have to say "我不懂看汉字” (Wǒ bù dǒng kàn hànzì).

Am I correct here?
