October 19, 2011 at 3:04 AMMy family told me the bad fengshui was directed at the HSBC building next door, and that in response HSBC installed window-cleaning cranes look like canons and keep them directed at the Bank of China building - fengshui wars! They also said that HSBC owns all the land between them and the harbour and won't let anything be built there, so that they can enjoy the great fengshui of being between the sea and mountains.
Apparently the Hopewell Centre in Wanchai was hemorrhaging money at first until they installed a pool on top upon the advice of a fengshui expert - because the building looks like a cigarette and it was burning away their profits!

April 2, 2011 at 11:58 PMYeah, which of course Kurt Cobain quoted in his suicide note. Would love to prove that they really just nicked it from Rev Mackay! Young and Mackay are both from rural south Ontario so it's possible there's a link there, and it would finally settle the argument as to who the true Godfather of Grunge was - a Presbyterian missionary in 19th-century Formosa.

April 2, 2011 at 5:10 AMAnother good example of the 宁愿,不原 structure is the oft-quoted (in Taiwan) maxim of Canadian missionary and founder of Taiwan's first university George Leslie Mackay - 宁愿烧尽,不原锈坏。

December 3, 2011 at 11:17 AMIs shú/shóu for 熟 a regional variance? In Beijing and Harbin I can only remember hearing shú but in Shanghai I've tended to hear shóu.
