I think Gang ga is closer to the word awkward. It can mean embarrassing buteven there I see people using it more in the context of embarrassment brought about from awkward situations. So here I think the Diu lian is fitting because it is a stronger feeling of embarrassment. That's from my personal observations but I could be wrong.
