但是，可是，不过 can all be conjuctions meaning "but."  Is there any difference in their usage? (有什么区别？）

i am used to using de 的 to express possession (even for people like 我的同屋) , but that is not done in this lesson.  When is 的 needed or not needed for people in your life?
