i never said it depends on the lenght of the body. It depends on the overall size. Must say I hear your explanation for the first time! You havent convinced me yet ;) I'm really not sure if it has anything to do with the shape/length of tails..(ô_ò) As for 牛 i learned the correct measure term should be 头 (should apply for all livestock).

August 17, 2008 at 2:50 PMhaha, i can imagine. The use of 只 or 条 is determined by size only (so it matters.. at least in dogworld ;) a sausage dog would definitely be 一只狗, whereas a Great Dane would be 一条狗. Sorry chubby dog, it has nothing to do with the length of your tail =)

我觉得 "一对人" 应该可以的吧。其实也碰到 "一双人"(a pair/couple)，但不知道是否正确的说法。。 maybe you'd use 双 rather for things than people.. :-?

"堆" 就是很常见的，但据我所知也挺口语的?! to me "街上有一堆游行示威者" sounds more like "a bunch of demonstrators in the streets" - slightly derogative.. dunno. 你说么？=)
there is also 群(qun2) and 批(pi1) for a group of people. although it seems 批 is mostly used with demonstrative pronouns 这 or 那.

Chinese is undeniable a very poetic language (which makes it all the more loveable). If "lady of one's heart/desire" seems a little too frumpy in this case, well .. Honey, Baby, Hottie, Birdy, Chick, Tart .. 哈哈哈，pick one.
No, the point is, presumed the basic meaning of the phrase (a somehow or other loved person) is captured, in modern translation studies there is no such thing as "right" or "wrong". Not even "good" or "bad" but rather "suitable" and "not so suitable".Which, by the way, is quite a blow to the 1st of 严复 Yán Fù's three principles for translation: 信,达,雅 (xìn, dá, yǎ) faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance.

this discussion has taken a slightly unexpected turn.. and i suggest we return to the root of the matter, as i'm perfectly aware of how to address my highly beloved 妈妈, no worries.
If "one's beloved" is too ambiguous, i'd really vote for rjberki's translation! I would go even further, maybe, and say "the lady of one's desire". 意 might not be 意思 or 意义的意 but rather 意愿的意. 中 would be a preposition, or better, the second part of a circumpostion, by which nearly all prepositional phrases in Chinese are formed (e.g. 在...中). This phrase may stand attributively to 人, i.e. something like "在我意愿中的人"... dunno, makes sense? :-?

量词 sure are damn confusing.
