July 24, 2012 at 6:14 AMI have just been using 美女 while smiling. Seems to work OK. I mean, I hear 帅哥 for me all the time, so I figure it's not inappropriate, just like a compliment. I haven't been frowned at yet.
I mean, in China they throw around the 美s and 帅s like nothing.

July 3, 2012 at 6:45 AMHere in Shenzhen a scam I've run into is two beautiful (usually) girls approaching you and then explaining they have no money and need to get home. They say they can't find work, etc.
The first time it happened to me in Jining, I actually gave the girls money becuase I believed them. But was warned I should just say "I can help you find the police."
A few weeks after moving to Shenzhen, just walking down the street, two girls came up to me and gave me the "we have no money speech" (in Chinese). I told them I could help them find the police, and they just paused. One of them complimented me on my Chinese and then they said they could go with me back to my apartment.
It made me very sad to realize how desperate these girls actually were for some money.

October 7, 2011 at 1:20 PMIf I'm trying to return the gift of being brought out to dinner, how do I express that? Even when I try to pay at the end of a meal (and it's my turn to pay) usually a Chinese person will stop me from paying... what do I do?

June 14, 2013 at 5:11 AMThis dialogue, like all the others, is hard to access on the Chinesepod App. Iphone4. All the downloaded content seems to erase itself the moment I am out of Wifi range. Really terrible.
