Lucky money given for Chinese New Year is called 利是 "lai si" in Cantonese.  It is also used to refer to money gifts in general.  You won't hear 红包 used as much.

Dear Amber,

Sad to hear about your departure from Cpod.  Thank you for all your great cultural insights and fun times!  You are an inspiration to me and, I'm sure, to all other listeners.

I wasn't able to come to the NY get-together in November, but maybe we'll meet in the near future.

Faye is definitely my favorite 歌手. Her songs are always so poignant and heartfelt.  Simply beautiful music!

When I visited the island 15 years ago, it had the feel of a quaint colonial outpost.  It truly was beautiful.  Sadly, all the present construction has made it is as fast paced and overcrowded as Hong Kong now.

Chillosk, maybe I was unclear but Bu Liu and Eyes on Me are both by Faye Wong 王菲.

I'm a big fan of Faye. She is such an amazing singer. Amber, I like Bu Liu a lot too but my favorite song of hers is the theme for Final Fantasy 8 called Eyes on Me!

Iris Chang, bestselling author of Rape of Nanking, also wrote a book called The Chinese in America. I highly recommend her books to all you Cpoddies out there. She will always be a literary stalwart in Asian America despite her early passing.

很喜歡這個學課。我是美國人,在紐約出生。我學普通話一年了,也說廣東話。

I remember visiting China as a kid back in the 沒有 period and still have vivid memories of that time. PLA soldiers were everywhere and basic necessities were a luxury. It has been amazing to see the immense change to people's fortunes and the rapid modernization of the Mainland.
