September 7, 2009 at 1:14 AMItalianpod???? Check the mp3 file name. Perhaps there is something in the theory that the Italians got the idea for spaghetti from China, but taking over a Chinesepod episode is another thing entirely.

September 13, 2008 at 2:56 AMI agree with Bahman. One of the most useful foreign language skills to have is the ability to"skim" the conversation of a native speaker for the key elements of meaning. I'm afraid that availability of a PDF file at intermediate level may make me a bit lazy,and slow my progress in this area. I find the clues offered in English are just about the right level of prompting for me.
Great linguistic discussion. Chinese has contributed much more to the Vietnamese language than just vocab. Vietnamese is one of the Mon-Khmer languages, and these are not tonal. Vietnamese tones are more complex than Mandarin, and to my ear closer to Cantonese. It appears that Chinese was the main influence in the development of tones in Vietnamese. Anyone know more about this?
