June 27, 2007 at 6:58 AMxiaohu, Yes, that's exactly how 随便 was used in Beijing! My wife (一位北京人) confirms this usage to mean 'informal' or 'easy going'. MDBG seems to agree: 隨便 sui2 bian4 as one wishes / as one pleases / casual 随便 Is this a regional difference?

June 25, 2007 at 7:23 PMJenny, You say "... 随便 is a very strong and even insulting statement". But I seem to remember my wife's relatives (in Beijing) using "sui2 bian4" to describe my general attitude as "easy going". Is there a difference in the meaning depending on the subject's gender?

June 13, 2007 at 4:20 AMGreat job cpod! I think the emotionally charged content helps with the long-term memory. How else would I remember how to say: 怪不得你沒開你的手機 ! (guài bu de nǐ méi kāi nǐ de shǒu jī) and with proper accusative vindictiveness: We will all be very formidable lovers indeed! And I suppose if I say "the story can't really be over, can it?" John will only say "Uh, triplelatte, the title of the lesson is 'It's Over' " :-) Which reminds me. John, why do you say Zhang Liang is such a wuss? And, more importantly, is there a Chinese equivalent of "wuss"? I've always supposed, with no supporting evidence, that the (American) English term "wuss" was an ingenious combination of "wimp" and, uh, "kitty-cat". Seriously though, this lesson set was very well conceived and executed. Thanks! tl

June 6, 2007 at 10:20 PMchinakt, bazza, I am also interested in Mandarin translations of English poker terminology: Does anyone know the Chinese names of the basic hand rankings? That is: Pair, Two-pair, Three-of-a-kind (trips, set), Straight, Flush, Full House (boat), Four-of-a-kind, Straight-flush? Also useful to know for Holdem: hole cards, community cards (board), pre-flop, flop, turn (4th street), river Describing the action: bet, fold, check, raise, re-raise, to "muck" a hand Describing the game structure and player position: limit (no-limit), blinds, big blind, small blind, button, Nth position, "under the gun" (first to act) Describing hands: "the nuts", "big slick" (AK), to be "on a draw", gut-shot/inside straight, etc, etc. :-) What fun, eh? This terminology must be out there somewhere.
