Posted on: Hungry Traveler: Inner Mongolia
February 27, 2009 at 4:26 AMI tried fermented mare's milk once on a strictly tourist trip to Inner Mongolia. They served us fermented mare's milk and we slept in ersatz yurts. Two observations: First, the girls did a dance in traditional Mongolian dress, then put on their miniskirts and went back to their apartment blocks. Second, after trying fermented mare's milk I was suddenly seized by a desire to conquer Asia and half of Europe in the hope of finding a decent brewery.

February 25, 2009 at 4:42 AMHello Changye,
Actually I've heard it said that way, and just typed what I thought I heard in pinyin; when I saw 妆 at the end, I figured that must be it.
Now you have me trying to reconcile the idea of unloading cargo and removing makeup.

February 25, 2009 at 4:27 AMdaveyjohn, 美眉 pops up all over on Google. Here it's 美眉梦工场, and obviously refers to the young lady on the left. That said, I'm having problems finding it in my dictionary; however Nciku has both your literal definition and Pete's poetic one here.

February 24, 2009 at 4:20 AMpaul_in_shanxi, guppytraders.com? I think I would feel more comfortable with sharks.com, especially these days.

February 24, 2009 at 4:09 AMluliaojie, 谢谢。
Bill, 请别介意,我开玩笑。I do remember your posts on Shenzhou, which dated you much to your credit.
Connie, 八十年代,我记得有不少台北的老太婆天天杀进杀出。说不定他们的回报率怎么样,可是我觉得她们的胆量很大。

February 23, 2009 at 8:44 PMBill, of course I agree. I remember in 1987 on Black Monday (You're too young to remember), my tiny portfolio dropped 35% in one day and only one of my stop-orders (of seven) was executed.
As it turned out, a year later I was up 5% from pre-crash levels and, of those seven stocks, the only one that I lost on was the one where the stop order did execute... at 40% below the stop price. How do you say stop-limit in Chinese?

Bill, 你买证券还是基金?

February 22, 2009 at 12:12 AMOne way to deal with sensitivity over pay (at least my way) is to just forget it. Somebody asks my pay, I tell them. If they tell me I'm fortunate, I agree. If they tell me I'm underpaid, I REALLY agree!
Sometimes, I think the sensitivity over pay is a Western (maybe American?) oddity.

February 27, 2009 at 4:30 AMI sometimes wonder if the whole "stative verb" concept is an attempt to fit a Chinese square peg into a linguistic round hole. Is the concept of stative verb a Western one (i.e. every sentence must have a verb), or have Chinese always described SV's as such?
