I have a question about the placement of 多 in a sentence when it means more than.

From the dialogue and expansion it seems that when you are talking about years, 多 goes after the word 年 (e.g. 我学中文学了一年多了), but when talking about money or hours, 多 goes between the number and whatever it is that you are talking about (e.g. 我回家要两个多小时, 这本书要五十多块).

When does 多 go directly after the number and when does it goes after the period of time or other thing that it is modifying?
