April 29, 2017 at 2:04 AMThe more I study Chinese the less I appreciate the benefits of so-called simplified characters. The only way in which they can realistically be called simplified is if one were writing them, but I never do that anyway (although writing simplified would still be very tough). The main problem is a) simplified can actually be harder and b) simplified still contains many traditional parts, meaning the learner had to learn more. Two simple examples. A) 厂 and 广 look almost identical, making it harder since they are totally different in sound and meaning. But 廠 and 廣don't. Plus if you learn 黄 it's easier to tie the sound of 廣 to something . So now, with characters like 广, the learner has to learn it alone, making it harder and also more confusing. Similarly with 阳, 陽場 among many others... B) 講 is simplified to 讲, yet the learner has to eventually learn characters like 篝 anyway, so what's the point? It's actually more work. The fact is that for the most part traditional also look cooler while also the so called advantages of simplified are minimal in the modern age and the main reason for it, solving illiteracy, was solved through improvements in education standards. As the mainlanders themselves admit, Mao was something like 40% wrong. How long before infuriatingly simplified characters are included in that category? The sooner the better IMO.
