If the locations are not very near but are kind of near, we say "挺近". I am puzzled why you find that 远 doesn't necessarily need 很.The truth is as a native Chinese speaker, I think 很 comes with both 远and近always. 很is used to indicate a degree of 远or近.Hope this helps. 龙年快乐!
