If the locations are not very near but are kind of near, we say "挺近". I am puzzled why you find that 远 doesn't necessarily need 很．The truth is as a native Chinese speaker, I think 很 comes with both 远ａｎｄ近always. 很is used to indicate a degree of 远ｏｒ近．Hope this helps. 龙年快乐！
