Question regarding the word choice in the first sentence:
服务员儿，拿点儿餐巾纸。Would have expected the word 些 in place of 点儿. Thinking that 些 would be used for items that come in discrete units (give me a few of those), as oppposed to items that do not have a natural unit (flour, sand, water, iron, etc. (material nouns?)).
Would folks say 服务员儿，拿一些餐巾纸 or would it be strange?

March 29, 2010 at 7:32 PMWell, interesting that everyone is talking about appearence. Y'all might well be right about that. When it comes to the sense of touch, however, the women with whom I have interacted, greatly prefer a beard over a shaved face. After all, a shaved face is not shaved for long...all too soon the hairs grow out and the woman is subjected to an irritating experience.

March 26, 2010 at 1:02 AMThe sentence "因为你的脚太大了" contains a final "了" which surprises me. Ahh....new use to indicate exaggeration (or emphasis perhaps) per Helen T Lin's Essential Grammar for Modern Chinese. Which would mean then that 大 would have to be a stative verb...which is just what DeFrancis' dictionary shows.

March 24, 2010 at 1:19 AMInterestingly John DeFrancis' ABC Chinese-English Dictionary shows 帐/账 as meaning "accounts, account book" and "debt, credit, credit account". 帐 is then listed separately as "curtain, canopy" and "tent". Both are "bound forms" meaning that they only occur in combination to make a word...not stand alone. Remarkable.

Question: the speed at which folks are talking in this lesson seems that it might be the natural speed of conversation between two friends. Is that right?

October 19, 2010 at 2:29 AMHello, the first sentence of the dialog in the PDF, 王先生，你好象很忙。Which is translated as "Mr Wang, you seem bery tired." Should it read 王先生，你好象很雷?
