The construction with 五花八门 in your sentences is different from the ones of the lesson. There the construction of the sentence seem to be the same as with 各种各样. That's good to know.

March 10, 2013 at 2:41 PMThis lesson is really interesting, many of these expressions are new for me. I have a couple of questions about it:
1. 孩子还没有回来，我的心七上八下的。Is the 的 in this sentence here to add a tone of certainty (like in many cases) ?
2. Could someone give more examples of sentences with 五花八门 ? I don't really understand how to use this 成语. It's the same meaning as 各种各样 but not the same construction, right ?
