As a tennis fan, I'm glad that Li Na has done so much for the sport in China.  I'm surprised that it wasn't a very popular sport there before.

Good lord, I wish someone had taught me this lesson earlier.  My sister went to Wuhan to teach English for a summer and since she's an ABC, she was usually asked to help translate for the other teachers. 

Is Wuhan considered a northern or southern city?  On the map it looks pretty central to me.

She also got confused about the word for spoon!  She tried to ask the waiter for a spoon using the southern word for it and they couldn't understand her.  One of the others teachers, a white American, had to teach her the northern word for it.  Pretty embarrassing for her.  =)

Hello fellow Cpod listeners. Like SiYao, I'm also Shanghainese American and raised in NYC. We spoke Shanghainese only in my house and if it weren't for Taiwanese dramas on TV, I would barely know any Mandarin. Until this series, I never realized how different the two languages were. No wonder Mandarin speakers can't understand Shanghainese at all!

I've never heard songs in Shanghainese before and was thrilled that I could understand what they were singing. They totally made my day. Can you guys give me the names of the bands?

Agree with Catherine that Shanghainese sounds a bit like Japanese (and French with the nasal sounds) though I never really thought about it sinceShanghainese isthe first language I learned and therefore it's hard for me to be objective about it. Just like I have no idea how English sounds to non-English speakers. I'm just too close to the langauge that I don't even think of it as a language. You know what I mean?

Thank you Cpod for this series. It's one of the main reasons I became a subscriber. Hope there will be more intermediary lessons in the future.
