I completely agree! The annoyance always having to wait for a translator was pretty strong incentive for me to learn my tones and characters! :P

Living in a large Mandarin speaking region of Canada, I have often find the same issue with Mandarin and English. Classmates or coworkers would often speak in Mandarin, unknowingly excluding their English speaking counterparts. I always assumed it was unique to oversea Chinese.
