November 23, 2011, 10:41 PMIt seems I had the same experience as John: when eating I had to choose either beer (or another kind of 酒）or rice. Not both. And sometimes the beer even got served in my 碗 (which I thought was meant for rice).
It mainly happens when I am eating with chinese men, so when drinking is expected.
