Please can someone explain the difference between lái de and lái le,

I am confused as to when the use of each is most appropriate.

Turns out I hadn't enabled the toolbar, depite being able to view characters. I can now write in Chinese!

Apologies if the answer to this question is completely obvious, but how do I write characters in the Dictation section of the exercises? There is no conversion button.
