September 29, 2009 at 8:59 PMhaha, I listened to the audio review after reading Tal's comment and I have to say that I completely agree with him. It would be really annoying and maybe even unbearable to listen to that more than once.

This pinyin converter is really cool! Is there any way it can be used to show tone marks above Chinese characters as well?

September 25, 2009 at 4:23 PMHey Matt,
One thing about Cantonese is that even though it has between 6-9 tones, the tones are all pitched in a way that don't sound extremly from one another. Mandarin has 5 tones, which is at least one less the Canto, but it's way more important to proununce the tones in Mandarin properly because non of them sound anything alike.
Both of the Canto text books I have say that Canto has 6 tones

September 25, 2009 at 6:29 AMso the Shanghai dialect is going extinct, is it? Do most Shanghai people know that? Is the local government doing anything to preserve the Shanghai dialect?
The Shanghai dialect sounds really Japanese. Speaking of Cantonese...I really want to learn it!! I meet way more Cantonese speakers in the US than Mandarin speakers. Plus it sounds cooler
