Whenever posts are deleted, I feel annoyed and troubled. Annoyed because I've missed the entertainment value of the deleted posts and troubled because there has been censorship. Seems to me the matter should have been nipped in the bud by asking the poster who wanted to discuss sexual groping with reference to nationalities to move the discussion to the Community board rather than have it on the Lesson board. Where is it ever a discussion on sexual tendencies of different races or nationalities a "regular Chinese studying programming"?

From the past four QW podcasts, it seems that the team no longer have questions from poddies to reply to. This week's QW is not bad, at least I cannot find the answers by simply looking up the word in the dictionary as I could with the "most" and the "until" QWs. However, since there are no longer questions from poddies to respond to, how about doing QW lessons on grammar?  Afterall, the new grammar guide long promised has yet to be delivered. Or perhaps scrap QW altogether and divert resourses to complete the long promised Cantonese dialect series.

Zhen,

Let me ask you the same sort of questions you're asking me. Why do you find the current sorts of QWs like the last two (Getting the Most From 最 and Guises of Until) great learning experiences? It's hard for me to understand why you're protecting as much as you think I'm grumbling. Lessons are "aha experiences". There were more aha experiences for me from QWs of yesterdays than the QWs of these days.

This week's QW is basically example sentences of 等到 deng2dao4 defined in the dictionary as "when" guised as "until". If this is great learning, we can have all sorts of QW with no need for teachers to teach... just get a few related words and give example sentences. For example, want a QW named "Degrees on Degrees? Simply go to MDBG, enter 等级 deng3ji2, and click on the example sentences.... there are ten of them!

I'll give you an example of a "aha learning experience". Last week I listened to a podcast called "Questions Of Marriage - Intermediate Level" from one of Cpod competitor's site. The dialogue was exceptionally humorous and practical, so much so it made it easy and a joy to remember the vocabulary words. And it contained the structure 一方面。。。另一方面 "on one hand... on the other hand. This is the sort of stuff that for me makes a worthwhile listening QW.

Understandably, since you're a linguistics major!

Yeah, I agree with you...the QWs of nowadays are perhaps not meaningless, but certainly not as useful as the QWs of yesterdays. As it is, I already have enough of a challenge trying to find, learn, and remember common and useful day to day Chinese sentences. I cannot afford to spend precious time learning to master the different ways (guises) of how to say "until". If I were pedantic, or a ferret for literary wordings, or is an advanced blogger in Chinese, or has a festish for splitting hairs when learning a foreign language, than perhaps I would have an interest on a QW like this one. Till then, I'll just use what I already know when I need to communicate "until" to someone "等/先 什么什么的,就做什么什么的“. Some people may enjoy learning how to say different shades of gray in a foreign language. I just want to know how to say "gray" and get on with the other colours.

当他们第一次见面,他原来以为简小姐是一个中国人,其实她是韩国人。她挺漂亮,白白的皮肤,脸上一个青春痘都没有,长长的头发,相当高,身材不错。她是个名牌的销售经理,以前在中国工作了两年多,会说中文但是不流利和不标准。他是最近从中国到加拿大的移民。他们的关系又方便又实际,每当她要玩得开心,她叫他出去俱乐部或者做什么什么的,等等。当然,她是付钱一切的。
