I knew a guy in Sacramento (which by the the way has at least two Chinese schools where people can send their children to learn mandarin and cantonese)

he was born and raised here, his parents also moved here before learning mandarin, they were able to speak cantonese though. anyways he attended an English school, and lived here in the U.S. until he met his wife who was the same way, then they moved to Guangzhou and became fluent in both mandarin and cantonese, he even has a Chinese accent when speaking English, so what i am trying to say is really it depends on the parents, many Chinese people that live here in the U.S. are hard working and really think its good for the children to learn English, I know several families who the parents can hardly speak English and their child can barely speak Chinese, its a weird situation but it seems to be okay.

I like to think of the old Chinese script- writing from top to bottom, 上 points up

to the word above, and 下 points down to the word below it. I found it easy to remember the two after this point was explained to me.
