The lessons become better and better, but the website becomes increasingly less functional. The pages often load very slow. Because of both the pronunciation of the vocab words on the vocab page is now delivered so slowly and also because you’re now using those bold fonts in the characters and some them you can’t even make out (this is a particularly amateurish web-design mistake) the vocab page has for me become mostly useless. I don’t even bother looking at it any more. Also, the instances of things just not working at all seems to be increasing, like today, I couldn’t get any pronunciation out of any of the pages in the expansion section. I recently spent $250 on a one-year premium membership, though with the way things are going I hope in the coming months I don’t end up regretting that. If the site can’t deliver the lessons in a fast and reliable manner than it doesn’t matter how good the lessons are. If one must spend too much time waiting for the site to work than it makes more sense to hire a private tutor.

July 16, 2008, 04:09 AMI live in Chengdu and have heard, from quite reliable sources, that "eating tofu" does allude to a man giving oral sex to a woman. It's pretty easy to see the connection, if you've any experience with this sort of thing, tofu or otherwise. It's also probably true that the hidden meaning has a lot regional variation.

I studied Mandarin and the University of Texas at Austin. I remember once the teacher gave us a very brief yet stern lecture saying that translating “小朋友” to mean “little friend” is incorrect. It is better to interpret it to mean “little kid.” Although, a word of caution, the English locution “little kid” tends to be a little gruff, where as the Chinese expression “小朋友” is fully benevolent.
