I think 买 ("to buy") is 3rd tone. 卖 ("to sell") is 4th tone. The way my tutor had me remember is that the salesperson has "something" on a high shelf (十)and has to take it down (the 4th tone).
Of course, it could also be a regional pronunciation difference? I've seen my Chinese friends debate over "which tone" before.
