I have heard that the Chinese themselves where unaware of the tones until the Jesuits pointed them out. I don't know if this is true or not. I also would like to know know about what they did language wise in China.

Not to knock on Marco Polo, but I thought I would mention that there had been contact between the West and China for ages before he went there.  I guess nobody captivated western imaginations quite like Marco, though.

对不起,可是这个课程的头像很有意思。你们那里强调了‘色’那个词让我想起来了另外一个意思,不是‘颜色’的意思,就是‘黄’的意思。而且,那个‘色’的词有彩虹的颜色,对在美国来说,这样的五彩缤纷的东西经常意味着‘同志’的意思。

对不起,有可能我的脑子有点怀。
