Replying to bodawei, this seems to relate to bertson144's remarks at the end of the 2nd page of Discussion in Elementary lesson #1163.  Maybe measure words were originally nouns and when a new noun cropped up, such as shū, it had to take a back seat to the older usage, such as běn in this case.  I don't know.  This is just speculation on my part and has to do with the history of Mandarin, a subject of which I know even less than the language itself.

To me, the next to last expansion sentence "Zhècì bǐsài zěnmeyàng?" seems more a statement in the present about what is going on unless there was a 'le' after zěnmeyàng, but I may have something wrong here in my interpretation of the Mandarin.  Anyone able to help on this?  Xièxie nǐ

Replying to hamshank, you might be right, but lujiaojie is acting as if 3-2-2-3 is correct.  In other words, she's treating nǐ separately and then invoking the two 3rd tones rule by treating kěyǐ xiě as a separate 'chunk'.  The two 3rd tones rule seems to only apply when they are treated as a whole separate chunk if I may quote Ken.  To see what I mean go to Elementary lesson #1413 where Jason explains near the bottom of the Discussion page that 'xīnkǔ' & 'nǐ' in "xīnkǔ nǐ le" are treated separately and the two 3rd tones rule doesn't apply.

I'm wondering which of these tone patterns, 3-2-3-3 & 3-2-2-3, is the right way to speak 'nǐ kěyǐ xiě', or are both acceptable?  Xièxie
