Why is the competition so intense? The answer is actually quite simple: latent profit. Right now there are massive markets that haven't yet been opened up which contain an abundance of untapped profit. This is why the competition in rising markets is far and away much more intense than that of mature markets.
We can see here that in the 1980's the total number of computer users stood at about 0.5% of the world's population. From the 90's on, this number has changed dramatically. And from this point, the year 2000, we can see that the proportion of computer users has risen to between four and five percent, which is an explosive amount of growth. Compared to the 80's, the number has increased tenfold.
