Although there are some verbs which can stand on their own with one syllable, in modern Chinese, many verbs are expressed in two (or more) syllables. In fact, most monosyllabic verbs can be changed into disyllabic verbs. This Qing Wen discusses some of the ways that Chinese verbs grow longer.

zài 在Zhōngwén 中文lǐmiàn 里面jiào 叫dān 单yīnjié 音节hé 和shuāng 双yīnjié 音节
In Chinese, they are called “dānyīnjié” and “shuāngyīnjié”.

In Chinese it's very easy, because monosyllabic words have just one character, and disyllabic words have two characters.

dànshì 但是xiàndàihànyǔ 现代汉语yībān 一般yào 要yòng 用shuāng 双yīnjié 音节de 的cí 词
But modern Chinese usually will use disyllabic words.
