The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected double Olympic-champion Caster Semenya’s appeal against the new rules for regulating testosterone levels in athletes with difference in sex development (DSD).

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) claimed that athletes with DSD have higher levels of natural testosterone, which gives them a competitive advantage in field and track events.

The new regulations, which come into effect on 8 May, will require athletes with DSD to reduce their blood testosterone level for a 6 month period.

DSD athletes will be expected to maintain these levels continuously for the rest of their athletic career, should they wish to continue to compete as women.

BBC reported, Semenya said the rules were “unfair” and that she wanted to "run naturally, the way I was born."

Though the CAS found the policy prejudicial to hyperandrogenous athletes like Semenya, they said "such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable, and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF's aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics in the Restricted Events," CNN reported.
