US federal prosecutors have charged dozens of individuals over a scheme that enabled wealthy parents to pay for their children’s admission to elite universities.

Two hundred FBI agents were involved in uncovering the scandal.

Among the 33 accused parents are a fashion designer, Hollywood stars, and a co-chairman of a global law firm.

The parents paid as much as $6.5 million to secure their children’s admission to schools such as Yale and Stanford.

College sports coaches and test center insiders accepted bribes to help obtain admissions.

William Singer ran the fraud operation through the college preparatory business Edge College & Career Network.

Singer has pleaded guilty to charges including obstruction of justice, racketeering, and money laundering.

Thirteen college sports coaches and associates of Singer’s are also being prosecuted.

Many of the admitted teens were not aware of the schemes, and neither they nor the universities have been charged as co-conspirators.

Andrew Lessing, the United States attorney for the District of Massachusetts, said in a news conference, “The parents are the prime movers of this fraud.”
