August 18, 2010, 09:54 PM posted in General DiscussionI've just noticed how many new users supposedly live in Afghanistan. Perhaps American soldiers have been spreading the word. Or perhaps the default should be to leave the country blank.

August 19, 2010, 01:54 AMMy wild guess is that some Taliban members in Afganistan might be now learning Chinese with Chinesepod in order to read the manufacturer's instructions for weapons produced in the PRC......?

If they do this, then I think they must learn more other languages.

August 19, 2010, 02:33 AM@changye,

也有,"Politics make strange bedfellows."

> Politics make strange bedfellows.
I don't know if this is the best equivalent for the English saying, but there is a well-known chengyu "吴越同舟", which means as follows:
quote
Convert an enemy into a friend; enemies crossing a river in the same boat; Even mortal enemies should help each other in the face of common danger.; Persons hostile to each other can even help mutually when they meet with the same dire peril at a critical movement.
unquote
kimiik
同舟共济 (people in the same boat help each other) has many equivalents in other languages :
(en) be in the same boat
(fr) être dans le même bateau
(de) im gleichen boot sitzen
...

August 19, 2010, 01:19 AM@go_manly, so why leave the country blank? Or do you mean that Afghanistan is at the top of the alphabetical list of countries?
