I have trouble with the verbs for keeping and leaving.
here are some examples:
Let's leave some (food) for tomorrow. 我們留下一點菜, 可以明天吃. (?)
Leave one for me. 給我留一個 (?)
Let's keep one fish and let the rest go. 我們只留一條, 其他條就放生好不好? (?)
You can keep it. 你可以留著 (?)
保留, 留下, 留著 etc. what is the difference?
感謝大家的建議

I'll leave the rest up to others! 其他的我给别人留着。

Jiaojie and Zhenlijiang thanks for keepng this topic alive....
So the general topic would be (把) direct object 給 indirect object 留著
What about my attempts at translation? Are they correct?
Also, could zhenlijiangs sentence be translated as 其他的我讓別人回答?
cheers and 感謝你們

October 02, 2010, 09:00 PMI had another related question.
So, I left my book in a classroom, and I wanted to ask me teacher, "Please keep it for me" or in Spanish, I would say, "Guardalo por mi" which has the meaning of keeping, storing, and the implication of keeping it safe!
我把我的書忘在教室,
幫我拿保存
或
幫我拿還給我
或
幫我拿放好
哪個句子說對得,最自然得?都錯了,那應該說什麼?
lujiaojie
You can say: 我把書忘在教室裡了,麻煩你幫我保存好。or 麻煩你幫我收好。

October 06, 2010, 01:21 PMHi,
I believe it should be 丟 instead of 忘
second, I am not so sure what the 拿 is doing there.
I would go with 我把我的書丟在教室裡, 麻煩你幫我保存好. (no guarantees though...)
anybody else?

Yes, you can use both 丟 or 忘,but here 丟 not really means "lost".
freddy1705
ok, thanks jiaojie. But what he meant was actually "left" and not "lost". The difference being that he knows were the book is (in the classroom). Isn't that the difference bertween 丟 and 忘? I am happy that my sentence is correct otherwise :-)

John
Freddy,
In this case 丢 does mean "forgot" (because the speaker knows where it is). This is sort of a special case where 忘 and 丢 kind of overlap, even though 丢 normally has more of a "lost" meaning.
freddy1705
Thanks John! To clarify (I will go over the QW again): In cases where you left something somewhere but still know where it is, you would use 丟, otherwise 丟 carries the meaning of lost, right? Whereas 忘了means "to have forgotten".
I usually use it with a verb i.e. 忘了帶. I didn't know it could be used on its own as in jiaojie's example.
In German we would say "left lying in place x" vs. "lost in place x" same as in English, I guess....anyway, thanks for doing a great job in giving clear grammar explanations.

留着明天再吃吧。
You can keep it.
这给你,收下吧。
( I'll leave the rest up to others! 怎么说? )
