May Day Shanghai Meet Up
rich
April 27, 2007, 11:33 PM posted in General DiscussionJust posting that I'll be in Shanghai next week and would love to meet anyone else who will be there as I got tons of time. I know ChinesePod will be shut down that week (don't worry folks, I'm sure you'll still be getting your lessons as they probably have to work double time this week like all my Chinese friends *whip crack*). Leave a reply or send me a message from my "connection" page. Hope to see some of you soon!<P>

April 28, 2007, 04:40 AMKen,
Didn't get my email? Also posted a little more on the Subway Announcement post. Okay, here are my current details:
Monday, April 30: Fly from Tianjin to Shanghai, leaving Tianjin at 11am.
Tues - Saturday, May 1 - 5: Free time in Shanghai
Saturday, May 5: Hopefully leave by train that Saturday night.
My main hope is to leave whatever time ChinesePod staff has to visit, as I would really like to get to know the people behind the voices. I will also be visiting: former teacher from Tianjin who now lives there with her husband; a couple who are friends with my family and have a 3 year old daughter none of us have seen; a few friends I made during my 2003 trip to Shanghai.
I will be traveling with two friends, a British guy who is my roommate and another friend of ours, a Danish woman who will be leaving back to Denmark soon to get married, so this is her last chance to see China. Neither of them speak Chinese, but I don't really plan to be with them too much unless they want to go people-seeing with me rather than sight-seeing.
If you have any suggestions on the best way to get a train ticket back to Tianjin during this busy holiday (we wanted to go by train there, but 买不到).
Really do hope for any chance to met, whether it be coffee, lunch or even and evening out... I have time for all those things, just would be great to know when I can tell other friends i will met them.

May 01, 2007, 12:24 AMWell, I'm in glorious Shanghai now, writing this message from my cell phone. (does CP have a mobile-friendly version of their web site?) Still no word from Ken after telling all my info about my stay. Been riding the subway here, and now know my hostel is at the Caoyang Road station. Subway's okay but the red line is a little old, and last night the subway closed on us when trying to get home at 10:30 and so we not only wasted money on the subway(no refund) also paid 35¥ for the cab. I thought Shanghai had night life!!!!! Only for people with cars or money?! Went to 新天地 which was cool to see again, went to what must have been the world's biggest & coolest 火锅 restaurant! Now the only cool thing that could happen is to meet up with some ChinesePod staff... Rich, a little lost in 上海

May 01, 2007, 02:04 AMHi Rich, Sorry, I had no idea where Putuo even is (Shanghai is really so big!)... so wasn't able to help out with which subway stop you were at. Hope you are enjoying Shanghai and getting to catch up with some of your friends here. Will keep in touch, we're all just taking a couple days rest after the long week past. I know Jenny mentioned something about meeting up too, so will stay tuned.

May 04, 2007, 12:50 PMAny for anyone who has been following this thread, the meet-up was really a treat (and I'm not just talking about being treated to coffee... ha ha). Getting to meet Jenny and John, the two speakers I usually listen to, and then Amber (who I realized recently due to V3 avatars is NOT chinese... ha ha). Pictures to come...

April 28, 2007, 02:34 AMRich, If you can offer more details it might be helpful. I know the ChinesePod team is goign to scatter for a few days for a well deserved rest, but it may be possible to connect. Which days will you be here? Where?
