John: There are actually quite a few verbs like this in Chinese, but I think for now these two are enough.

John: And since most Chinese people use the gas [stove?] it literally is 'bigger fire', 'bigger flame', 'smaller fire', 'smaller flame'.

John: How did you say 'change to lower heat'?

John: Often 变成 means 'turn into', but in this case 'turn it to'.

John: Now I know 烫 also means 'scald'. And also when you say something is really hot to the touch, its burning to the touch, you say 很烫.

John: So you can say something 很烫. That's an adjective. But here its a verb meaning 'to scald', 'to quickly boil'.
