Play button stops working

September 29, 2013 at 03:21 PM posted in ChinesePod Mobile AppsIn the mobile app (Android, Samsung S III), when in the Dialog, Expansion, or Grammar tabs, one can hit the Play button only so many times before it stops working.
To recover, it is not enough to bump up one level, to the Lesson. You have to bump up to the lesson list, then reselect the lesson and reenter the tab (Dialog, Expansion, or Grammer). After that, the play button works again (for a time).
I don't know the exact number of times before failure, or what other factors are involved, but it has been happening consistently for a month or so.

Well, I have not had the "play button stops working" since since last week -- maybe it coincides with 3.8.8? Not one occurrence of it since then. So maybe it's fixed for good. Thanks for whatever you did. It also could possibly be related to local resources, as you mentioned.
My usual use case is to play the same file several times before moving on. But the problem happened whether I repeated the same file or moved sequentially through different files. Also, in case it's any clue, I seldom use the Vocab tab, but am most often in the Dialog, Expansion and Grammar tabs.

It DOES work! I used it a bunch yesterday with no problems. Thanks!

The delete-all-audio-files now should work on the Lesson page in v3.8.9. Thanks for pointing that out.

On the play button issue, are you playing new sentences each time, or do you mean clicking the play button to start, then stop, then start, then stop the same audio? I assume for practical use you would be playing a new vocabulary word or sentence each time, right? And you let the last one finish playing? (Of course it should be able to handle stopping and starting the same sound, or playing a new sound when one is already playing, but trying to learn how to reproduce what you have going on).
One thought is that this may have to do with your devices memory, speed, and what it allows your app to be doing, etc. Not sure. My devices tend to have a lot of memory, so hard to restrict them from having enough, as well as disk space. Can you check, just out of curiousity if your sdcard0 folder (usually that it was it is called...there is an internal sdcard and an external sdcard, but if you have an internal sd card we must put the files there) and see if it has plenty of space, or more than 95% full?

Here's one other standing problem I haven't mentioned before.
The "trashcan" delete-all-files button works fine when you are in a list,
But if you are on a lesson page, hitting that button always crashes CP.
This happened to me again about 15 minutes ago so you may be able to locate a crash report that way,

I've just upgraded to 3.8.8.
The repeatable "play button stop working after exactly 7 times" I reported last week went way after a day or so. Since then that issue is back to the way it was before, i.e., the play button stops working eventually, but not predictably.
Some progress on the self-study list refresh -- it did refresh properly after I went to 3.8.8, added a lesson, and hit the refresh button on the bottom menu. That's nice, thanks.
Will keep my eye on the play button issue as I use the app.

cowenparkseattle, I haven't been able to reproduce this problem on the phones I have, but I have made a few fixes to make sure resources are being given up at certain times to save some memory. Can you try the 3.8.8 version and try again?

I am going to look into this this coming week...sorry about this problem. I have gotten more familiar with the memory consumption that the media player takes on Androids and so can now go back to the ChinesePod app and optimize it for better media playing, so it is releasing resources and not taking up memory in which it is unable to play any more. Thanks for your patience. Will get on it starting on Monday.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I will look into it and try to figure out what is causing the play button to no longer work.

November 13, 2013 at 04:49 AMThis problem has suddenly become worse.
You now get exactly 7 plays before the play button stops working. This happens on every lesson I tried (dialog or expansion). And it is perfectly repeatable. You can either repeat the same sentence 7 times, or play 7 different sentences, and then it stops working. To recover, you have to back up to the lesson list and then go back down.
Only on the mobile app (Android). Works OK on the web.
