One of my phrase books has the following sentence construction to ask where is the nearest something.

附近有…………吗?

Examples

附近有地铁站吗?

Where's the nearest subway station?

附近有公共汽车站吗?

Where's the nearest bus station?

附近有火车站吗?

Where's the nearest train station?

Is this construction correct and commonly used?

Actually, "附近" means "nearby, close to". The most accurate way to ask the question, "Where is the neareat (place)?", should be, "最近的(某个地方)在哪里?". "最近" has two meanings in Chinese. One is "recently, lately", the other is "the nearest". Believe me, I teach Mandarin. :-)

"The most accurate way to ask the question"? I don't know what that means exactly, but I can tell you that the pattern you asked about is extremely commonly used. Learn it.
