As this is not that commonly know in the West - like teacher's day in september - I'd just want to take the opportunity to thank all the women at Chinesepod for their great work and do hope you get some time off today (eh, Ken et. al.?).

女同学们也祝三八妇女节快乐!

To find out what this all about, please be referred to last year's lesson http://chinesepod.com/lessons/international-womens-day/discussion.

I am today's typo king! (It should've been: "...commonly known ...", "... grim topics ...")

One of my Chinese friends told me that 三八 also refers to someone, male or female, who likes to gossip. Does this expression stem from 三八妇女节? If so, that would be incredibly ironic (哭笑不得).

windwalker: The 三八 for a gossiper, moron etc. is unrelated. It looks like this 三八 is older and a play on words or something like 二百五 deriving from a chengyu.

I seem to remember that my Chinese colleauges working in China (the women) did get the day off or at least half a day last year. Unique to China. This and that tea made with little red buds floating around in it. Looks delicious but I was told "only women drink this". I didnt want to start any inaccurate rumors so I didnt try it. :-) They all got a really nice stainless steel tea mug for womens day also. Im jealous.

RJBerki: About 20 minutes ago my wife got that tea when we were in a restaurant across the street. Because it is womens day. I tried it. It is terribly sweet.

Henning- thank you for risking your manhood to obtain that bit of information. :-) Doesnt sound like I would like it anyway. I am not a fan of the terribly sweet. There are supposed to be some health benefits associated with this tea I think. Mostly beneficial to women. You are still in China it sounds like? -RJ

If I am understanding things correctly, there's some kind of public debate, campaign against domestic violence and abortion of female feti in China: http://hi.baidu.com/hi/more/topic/topic88.html Although, these are quite grim topic, maybe they could be incorporated into some lesson in the future... Waddaya think?

lydia1981: I was trying to extend my wishes to all the women learners with 女同学们也祝三八妇女节快乐! nǚtóngxuémen yě zhù sānbā fùnǚjié kuàilè! Did I mix up the words, word order or something that this is incomprehensable gibberish instead of something resembling a Chinese sentence? 我真是二百五。

henning: Did the tea look something like this:

Joachim, I think your Chinese sentence was perfectly fine, I just overread it... 你肯定不是二百五!我才是。。 maybe 女同学们,也祝你们三八妇女节快乐! sounds even better, but you'd have to ask one of our hardworking Chinesepodteachers to know for sure! guess they are enjoying their (half) day of though.. :-)

Joachim, no, it did not. It was real, liquid tea, albeit with lots of stuff in it.
