Your City's Attractions . . . in Mandarin

I really enjoyed the Chinese names for the top attractions in the recent Paris lesson. I'd like to learn more from other cities. Feel free to add any attractions from your city, or from your favorite city if yours doesn't have any ;)

This one is pretty boring, but I'll start with one from Chicago:

西尔斯大楼

xīěrsī dàlóu

Sears Tower (formerly the tallest building in the world)

Good idea. :) The Chinese name of my little hometown is 明斯特 and the main attractions are the 圣保罗主教座堂 and the 市政厅. Here is the Chinese wikipedia entry for 明斯特: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/明斯特

第一: 密歇根大学 第二: 在底特律附近 (Is that correct for "Near Detroit?") 第三: 这里有很多国际人。 第四: 这个城市非常美丽的! English: 1. The University of Michigan 2. Near to Detroit 3. There are many internationals here. 4. This city is sooo beautiful!

我有一个房子在Atlanta, GA.。 大家都知道可口可樂。 你们知道在Atlanta有一个可口可樂博物馆吗? 真的。 (Anyone, please feel free to correct my mistakes in Chinese...I'm trying though!)

Hi wei1xiao4. I think the word order in your first sentence should be different. I would say it like this: 我在Atlanta, GA拥有一套房子. Also, 套 is a better measure word for 房子 than 个.

... and 拥有 and 有 can both be used. If you want to emphasize that you own the house, then 拥有 is better.

拥有和有的意思是一样的,只是”有“比较口语化,而”拥有“就很书面语。如果是在日常生活中说还是用“有”比较好。“拥有”一般会用来表示拥有一些比较珍贵的东西。如“拥有一份珍贵的爱情"

The Cologne locals (even the immigrants) are so proud of their little town that they claim it to be a world metropolis. Which it is of course. What other major city does have the 科隆大教堂 (Kölner Dom)? http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%A7%91%E9%9A%86%E5%A4%A7%E6%95%99%E5%A0%82 and tries to turn the whole year into one long, wild carnival party? There is nothing like crossing the Rhine by car or train towards that amazing city panorama. Going home. Check it out! http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%A7%91%E9%9A%86%E5%A4%A7%E6%95%99%E5%A0%82

According to what sophie20461 says in her Chinese post above, it is better to use 有 in spoken language and 拥有 in written/formal language. And 拥有 sometimes refers to very precious things (like love). Thanks for explaining this!

我的市是悉尼: [悉尼]歌剧院 [Sydney] Opera House [悉尼]港后桥梁 [Sydney] Harbour Bridge We also have some indigenous animals that are famous around the world: 考拉 Koala - This is the way it was said in the Sydney lesson on ChinesePOD and I assume this is the conversational way of saying it.. but apparently it is called both 无尾熊 (Koala) 树袋熊 (Tree Wombat).. 袋熊 Wombat :) 袋鼠 Kangaroo :) [NB: See the 袋 word here.. it means "a pouch, bag, sack, pocket".. and that is the defining characteristic of marsupials. They are mammals with pouchs. 袋兽 - Marsupial. :)] 鸸鹋 Emu :) 鸭嘴兽 Platypus :) That's all I can think of right now.

sophie20461,你现在住在哪里?如果你有机会的话一定要来香港玩。 港币最近贬值了不少,所以对国内人来说,香港的吸引力提高多了。 还有,在九龙和新界有些便宜的酒店。
