May 20, 2008, 02:52 PM posted in General Discussion我听说过了多次“难得”，但是还有点不清楚应该怎么用，好难得啊。。。。
So there's an expression "nan de" that I hear a lot, but still don't really have a good grasp of how to use.
Any podcast lessons with it? Did a search using the Chinese hanzi, but came up empty, the English search returned too many for me to fish thru.

Actually, I just like the sound of it a lot. Maybe I'll fall back on my tied and true study method of just saying it all the time and having people ask me if I'm from Xin Jiang...呵呵

Something not easy to obtain or accomplish: 这个机会很难得。 Zhège jīhuì hěn nándé. 遇见这么好的人非常难得，你要珍惜。 Yùjiàn zhème hǎo de rén fēicháng nándé, nǐ yào zhēnxī. 2. Doesn't often occur: 上海很难得下这么大的雪。 Shànghǎi hěn nándé xià zhème dà de xuě. 最近难得看见你来打球。 Zuìjìn nándé kànjian nǐ lái dǎqiú. 你难得来一次北京，我一定要陪你好好玩玩。 Nǐ nándé lái yīcì Běijīng, wǒ yīdìng yào péi nǐ hǎohao wánwan.

Do you have a relatively large paper (or electronic) Chinese dictionary and comprehensive grammar books that show you a lot of example sentences and explanations? If not, I recommend you get them as soon as possible. Just listening to podcasts is not enough to make fast progress systematically in learning languages. 你在一个播客里难得遇到”难得”这个单词。

May 23, 2008, 01:31 AMhenning 这么说来“舍不得”在英语中好像没有固定的短语，是不是啊？ lantine 你把“舍不得” 解释成了“不得不” 这两个词有点不一样哦。 是“舍不得”就像henning说的那样而“不得不” 是必须的意思，有时候还有点强迫的意思。 如“我不得不去看医生了”

But I think you can translate 舍不得 as "couldn't bear to"/ "was extremely reluctant to"/ or (more formally) "was loathe to": "Most Chinese people can't bear to throw away anything that they have used for a long time, even if it's broken." "I would dearly love to buy that CD, it's just that I'm loathe to spend so much money for only 6 tracks of music." "I am really reluctant to leave my home country even though I can earn more money working overseas." Thanks for everything you do for us, sophie.
