Firefox 3 Mouseover Dictionary Plugin

Hi guys,

Joannah posted earlier about difficulties installing her perakun plugin under Firefox 3. I haven't been able to dredge up that thread, but wanted to post a link to a more updated version we've released:

http://adsotrans.com/plugin/install.html

This version is similar to perakun in the sense that it also uses the Adso dictionary and provides translations/pinyin for Chinese text on mouseover. The interface is standardized Adso-style and the backend code is designed for Chinese rather than Japanese texts. We've automated the process of producing the database and will be releasing regular dictionary updates as well, which should benefit the perakun community too.

The code itself is "hot off the press", and hasn't been tested in anything but Windows and Linux. Please report any issues you run into and they will be fixed promptly.

Cheers from Beijing,

--dave

The Adso mouseover plugin only reacts on simplified characters, and it gives only one translation of many...

Chinese perapera seems a better choice.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. An updated version is online. Here are the updates:

* all dictionary definitions now display in the popup.

* it works with traditional chinese text

* better all-around support for traditional/pinyin entries (entries showing up as "unknown" or "?" have been nearly completely eliminated).

If you have suggestions please keep them coming. I'll try to fix problems as they're pointed up and update this thread accordingly. The next major improvement will probably be getting the local database to update in response to edits. It would be nice to see the changes made in real-time, without having to update the plugin all the time. There are a number of smaller issues that I've noticed too (including the strange lines that are appearing in the popup here on ChinesePod). We'll get these solved.

-------------------------------

@bazza - 你 is working for me now. I think the problem was related to the traditional character lookup problem, which is fixed. Where there are characters that don't give popups, the problem should be that they aren't in the database. We'll add them as we find them.

@marcelbdt - the plugin was ignoring all but the first definition. Fixed that and reduced the size of the english field. Not sure how I feel about the semi-colons.

yes it works with trad. text, but displays only the ugly simplified script. So I uninstalled it.

Adso does not seem to give all the translations it should. For instance, the only translation for 上 is "to board", which is correct, but not the whole truth.

I'm sure that adso knows more than it tells us. Chinese Pera-kun gives much more complete information, but that program should essentially know the same data as adso, right?

很久以前,一个织布工听到人在他的家门口外面哭了。他觉得很奇怪。外面倾盆大雨,天黑了。他一点害怕,然而他打开门。那儿有一位女孩子,她一边哭了一边拿着半个西瓜皮,在半个西瓜里面有一个小婴儿。

你继续吧!
